History - The Walking Machine

In 1817 Baron von Drais invented a wooden walking machine that would assist him around the royal gardens. The bike and its rider were propelled forward using the feet against the ground, rolling forward in a gliding walk. The device became known as the Draisienne or hobby horse. The Draisienne enjoyed a short-lived popularity as a fad, but was not overly practical for transportation outside of maintained pathways, such as in parks or gardens, largely due to its all wooden wheels.
